Travel trends have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic and more people are traveling by automobile. In August, long-distance automobile trips increased 37.6% over the year before. The shift in travel behavior may be an example of the “new normal” when it comes to how Americans will travel to more distant destinations. North Dakota Tourism will present a road trip route across the state each month through the fall. Let this be your starting point for a multi-day adventure in your own backyard.
This month: Interstate 94.
Day 1 | Fargo + West Fargo
Experience the charming elegance of North Dakota’s largest city and its next-door neighbor. Downtown Fargo features a diverse collection of boutiques, small eateries and craft breweries, local musicians and coffee shops. Get a real taste of the college-town vibe in the evenings along and near Broadway.
Away from downtown, the 13th Avenue corridor between Fargo and West Fargo is a mecca for overnight visitors looking for shopping or wildlife at the Red River Zoo.
Day 2 | Jamestown + Bismarck
America’s official mammal, the bison, is a big deal in Jamestown – a really big deal. The World’s Largest Buffalo draws travelers, the onsite bison herd piques their interest, and the National Buffalo Museum completes the story.
More history awaits at the state’s largest museum in Bismarck. Displays at the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum present the state’s colorful past, present and future in several large galleries.
Day 3 | Mandan + Enchanted Highway
Step back in time to 1876 and see what life was like in the 7th Cavalry at Fort Abraham Lincoln and learn about our Native American culture at On-A-Slant Indian Village. Larger-than-life legends give way to a giant cow and some of the world’s largest metal sculptures along the Enchanted Highway. Did someone say “selfies?”
Day 4 | Dickinson + Medora
Life-sized dinosaurs are the centerpiece of the Badlands Dinosaur Museum, while cowboys and Rough Riders take center stage in the Old West town of Medora. The great outdoors beckons in Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the nightly Medora Musical is a tribute to the conservation president.
