At the end of each year, North Dakota Living randomly selects a Reader Reply submission as a grand prize winner. One submission is drawn from among all the Reader Reply submissions which were published throughout the year.
Susan Schmitt, a member of Slope Electric Cooperative, won $100 when her name was drawn from among the authors whose replies were published in 2018.
Susan has been a regular contributor to Reader Reply, but her name was drawn from the July 2018 issue, in which she submitted a reply to the following: “Whether it’s a local county fair or the North Dakota State Fair, what’s your favorite memory of a fair in North Dakota?”
In her reply, Susan wrote about her first memories of the North Dakota State Fair. She recalls her family getting tickets to the Kenny Rogers concert.
“My dad was ecstatic. Next thing we knew, we were sitting in the grandstand waiting for the start of a show that is forever etched into my memory. I’ll never forget sitting there and stealing side glances at my dad, who was riveted to the country western icon’s stellar concert. His sheer delight was easy to see. I wasn’t much of a fan before that, but to this day when I hear his music, I can’t help but think of that show, my dad, and the best trip I ever had to the North Dakota State Fair,” Susan wrote.
Susan lives on a farm near New England, where she enjoys the outdoors, particularly her beehives, chickens and garden. She’s also a nurse at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson. Susan also likes to write and appreciates the opportunity to express herself provided through Reader Reply.
“I do like to write, and I love to promote North Dakota,” she said.
