The Christmas season evokes nostalgia, offering reminders and stories that connect generations. It invites reflection on years gone by, while sparking excitement and curiosity about what the future holds.

Tapping into this nostalgia, I find myself reflecting on the history and legacy shared by electric cooperatives, the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) and this magazine. It is a legacy of cooperation, rooted in a shared responsibility and unwavering commitment to serving members and telling the stories of the people and places we call home.

Our story began in the 1930s, when electric cooperatives first formed following the creation of the Rural Electrification Administration. In 1942, NDAREC was established to unify and amplify the voices of cooperative members at both the state and federal levels. By the 1950s, the North Dakota Rural Electric Magazine, now known as North Dakota Living, emerged as a tool to further strengthen member education and communication.

This unique mix of service, advocacy, education and communication is a thread that ties the electric cooperative network together – and it has served cooperative members well for more than 80 years.

From organizing co-ops and building infrastructure to securing reliable power, defending rural interests and telling the stories of North Dakota’s people and places, we’ve remained steadfast in our commitment to serve cooperative members.

As technology, membership and energy needs have evolved, we have adapted, helping to meet challenges and seize opportunities.

Co-ops remain committed to putting members first and building a brighter future for the communities they serve. The cooperative model supports long-term prosperity, strengthens communities, and creates lasting economic and social impact.

Just as electric cooperatives are more than utilities, this magazine is more than pages: It’s a platform for connection and storytelling.

Looking back at the issues from this past year alone, we’ve introduced elected leaders and informed on key policy matters. We brought attention to industry challenges through the Cost of Your Power series, celebrated our youth and educational opportunities, and highlighted remarkable people and hidden gems across North Dakota. We’ve shared stories of communities rising to the occasion, honoring traditions and culture, and exploring technology through generational perspectives. We’ve showcased the co-op commitment to wellness, food access and service. Most recently, we proudly saluted our nation’s veterans.

Whether it be sharing stories or delivering electric service, we’ll always do it with purpose and passion.

From all of us in the electric cooperative network, thank you for your trust. We look forward to continuing this mission in the years ahead.

Wishing you a merry Christmas and a bright new year!
