Be aware of elevated fire threat

Thousands of acres and North Dakota producers have been affected by October’s wildfires.

“It’s hard to imagine what producers are going through right now,” says N.D. Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) President Randy Schmitt, a cow-calf producer from Rugby.

And in the absence of substantial moisture, many fear the threat of additional fires, he says.

As first responders across the state stand ready to respond to wildfire emergencies, others are sharing resources and offering aid.

DISASTER RELIEF FUND
The Out of the Ashes Wildfire Disaster Relief Program launched in October to support cattle ranchers who suffered significant losses during recent wildfires. NDSA and the N.D. Stockmen’s Foundation (NDSF) kickstarted the disaster relief fund with a $50,000 initial contribution.

One of the fires narrowly missed NDSF President Jason Leiseth’s ranch in Arnegard.

“Our family was lucky, but there are many that weren’t. We want to do all we can to help them through this catastrophe,” he says.

Application and nomination forms for the disaster relief program are available at www.ndstockmen.org.

To donate:

• Make check payable to NDSF with “Out of the Ashes” in the memo line and mail to: N.D. Stockmen’s Foundation, 4520 Ottawa St., Bismarck, ND 58503.

• Give online at https://app.givingheartsday.org/#/charity/1576.

DOCUMENTATION
The Farm Service Agency (FSA) and North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension remind producers to document losses and the wildfire effects before starting cleanup.

“Livestock losses are often an unfortunate part of wildfires. Prior to any carcass disposal action, documentation of loss is critical,” says Mary Keena, NDSU Extension livestock environmental management specialist.

Producers should record all pertinent information regarding livestock losses due to the eligible adverse weather or loss condition, FSA urges, and collect photos, videos, receipts and other livestock records. SAFETY
While the fire threat remains high across the state, heed these safety tips:

• Be aware of current burn restrictions. Visit www.ndresponse.gov for a burn restrictions map, up-to-date wildfire information, fire danger ratings and the North Dakota Fire Monitor, which tracks current active wildfires across the state.

• Stay on trails and don’t drive or park vehicles, including off-highway vehicles, on dry grass.

• Make sure chains aren’t dragging when hauling boats, campers or trailers.

• Never leave campfires unattended and be sure they are completely extinguished.
