Meet the people who harvest it

Each day, they rise with the sun and rest only after dusk – a tough breed shaped by real risks and driven by inherited passion. Even when harsh weather or rising costs threaten a year’s work, North Dakota’s farmers and ranchers keep going.
They live in one of the most bountiful states in the country, yet, in some areas, people still find it difficult to find high-quality, locally grown food. This puts pressure on food supply chains and small-town grocery stores.
Now, a new project in Velva – the North Central Regional Grocery and Food Hub – is bringing hope. This effort aims to build a stronger, more reliable food system focused on quality and local products. It is being developed by North Dakota’s electric and broadband cooperatives, with support from the Bush Foundation.
The stories that follow highlight three North Dakota producers working to bring fresh food and stronger connections to their communities.
