If you’re planning a road trip through North Dakota, hit these stops along Highway 2.
Day 1 | Grand Forks
As the “Best Hockey Town in the Country,” Grand Forks has several ways to immerse yourself in its culture. Start with a cup of coffee at Urban Stampede, then tour the Ralph Engelstad Arena. Grab an iconic “Grinder” sandwich at the Red Pepper, then explore the 2,200-acre greenway of natural open space in the heart of the city. Stop by Widman’s Candy for the “Chippers” and top off the evening at Rhombus Guys.
Day 2 | Devils Lake
Boasting a four-season fishing playground, time on the water is a must in Devils Lake. Explore the trails of White Horse Hill National Game Preserve and see how many bison and elk you can spot. Take a moment for history at Fort Totten State Historic Site. Make your way to Woodland Resort, where you can “hook” your own meal or dine at Proz Lakeside, then relax with a lakeside lodging experience.
Day 3 | Devils Lake/Rugby/Minot
Start the day at Old Main Street Cafe in Devils Lake before traveling to the Geographic Center of North America in Rugby. Detour driven? Head north for a stop at the International Peace Garden before arriving in Minot. With the Scandinavian Heritage Park, museums and art communities like Artsplace, there is plenty of history and culture to dive into. Before the night ends, try some Irish fries from Ebeneezer’s Eatery & Irish Pub.
Day 4 | Minot/Burlington/New Town
Spend the morning with more than 150 animals at Roosevelt Park Zoo. Then treat yourself to a glass of wine from Pointe of View Winery in Burlington. Once in New Town, explore the new MHA Interpretive Center showcasing the culture and history of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara tribes. Visit the Earth Lodge Village along the shores of Lake Sakakawea. End the day with a yacht tour at 4 Bears Casino and Lodge.
Day 5 | Williston
Try JC Java’s world-famous undertow drink before heading to Williston. Go on a self-guided tour of the Fort Union Trading Post and walk the trails of the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center. Try out the Painted Woods Shooting Range before ending your trip with a meal at 3E Pastry Café. Be sure to pack some baklava for the ride home.
